Artist Katia Lifshin

Katia Lifshin (b.1993, Israel) is a Ukraine-born Israeli artist who primarily focuses on themes

such as family bonds, childhood memories, identity and friendship through her practice. She

relocated to the U.S in 2012, studied painting and sculpting at Pima College, Tucson, Arizona. Returning to Israel in 2018, she now lives and works in Tel-Aviv.

"I use old monochromatic photographs as a guide and inspiration to my work. Relying on

photography to capture a moment creates a fragmented piece of it, open for interpretation. I

use this opening to create new meaning for the old photographs, and recast them as colorful

oil paintings. I utilize the photographs as a reference, modifying them to my own personal

narrative. I often focus on themes such as family bonds, childhood, identity and friendship."

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background in the arts.

My name is Katia Lifshin, I'm a 28 year old artist from Tel Aviv. I was born in Ukraine and my

family immigrated to Israel when I was 4. I studied art at Pima College in Arizona, and I have

participated in exhibitions across the U.S and Israel. Currently I live and work in Tel Aviv, Israel

What kind of work are you currently making?

My current series of works is about love and games. I paint scenes and portraits of

young women and girls that capture the state of mind of being in love and the struggles that

come with it. These works, like the subject itself, are very whimsical and playful, and on the

other hand do have a dark side to them, metaphorically speaking and through their colors as

well!

What is a day like in the studio for you?

Music is a must for me when I'm painting, so that's the first thing I do when I start my day in

the studio, and I like working late at night.

What are you looking at right now and/or reading?

I’m reading The Garden of Eden by Arnset Hemingway, and I also bought myself a birthday

gift recently: an art book with the works of Lisa Yuskavage, I love her! She definitely had an

influence on my work, particularly in terms of color.
